Defending and Extending women's rights on abortion

In line with policy, the STUC and affiliates are lobbying Members of Parliament at Westminster to oppose any restrictions to the 1967 Abortion Act, and to vote for the extension of certain provisions of the law, including to legalise provision of abortion services for women in Northern Ireland.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, to which a number of amendments on abortion have been tabled, is likely to come before the Westminster Parliament for its final report stage, on the 22nd October.

Campaigning is therefore urgent, and more information on events, model letters, and the issues under consideration, is available from:

Updated information

Amendments to the 1967 Abortion Act will be debated in the final stage of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill debates on 22nd October.

Abortion Rights is planning a pro-choice protest at the House of Commons on Tuesday 21st October, 5.30pm, on the eve of the final voting, at Old Palace Yard, opposite St Stephen's entrance, Westminster. Abortion Rights is asking trade unions to support the event, encourage members to attend, bring union banners, etc. More information available from 020 7923 9792 or at www.abortionrights.org.uk

Abortion Rights also has a briefing for trade unions on the amendments and is asking unions to ask sponsored MPs to vote for choice.
