STUC Welcomes Workers Memorial Day Consultation

IWMD Glasgow 2009

The Scottish Trade Union Congress has welcomed the announcement that the UK Government plans to consult on formal recognition of International Workers Memorial Day.

Speaking ahead of a number of events throughout Scotland organised by the STUC and local Trade Union Councils Grahame Smith, General Secretary said

“The STUC has recognised International Workers Memorial Day since 1993 being on one of the first to do so. We have always supported formal recognition of the day throughout our society and their announcement from the UK Government is particularly welcome.

Our organisation and our affiliates will be responding in depth to this consultation and would sincerely hope that by the time we gather next year the United Kingdom will have formally recognised this special day.
