“Earn as You Learn” Programme wins Adult Learners Award!
The Rail Union Learning project’s “Earn as You Learn” programme is the winner of the Adult Learners Award from the Scottish Adult Learning Partnership. The Adult award was presented by Television Presenter, Grant Stott (Scotsport) at a ceremony in Edinburgh on the 15th February. The award recognises the efforts of all who assisted in the development of the programme.
The programme’s stated aim is: “To re-engage with non-traditional learners within the rail industry through the provision of an everyday skills programme that uses innovative practice to overcome barriers to learning.” It involves adult learners attending a 10 week programme, in groups, once a week for 2 hours. The programme is completely free and family and friends of rail employees are also welcome to join. In addition, each participant is paid the equivalent of 20 hours pay upon completion. Most programmes are delivered in the Rail Learning Centre located within Glasgow’s Stow College. The programme itself is completely learner centred, the delivery style is relaxed and informal and the content is based around the specific needs of the learners. It tackles everyday skills such as form filling, correspondence, household finances and helping children with homework.
