Control Arms: Stop Violence Against Women Conference
STUC Women’s Committee / Oxfam in Scotland / Scottish Women’s Convention
STUC Centre, Glasgow, Monday 9 October 2006
A Conference entitled “Control Arms: Stop Violence Against Women” is being organised jointly between the Committee and Oxfam in Scotland, and supported by the Scottish Women’s Convention.
The event is taking place on Monday 9 October 2006, at the STUC Centre, 333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow G3 6NG, between 9.30am and 1.00pm, with a buffet lunch provided for delegates.
Someone somewhere dies every minute of every day because of armed violence and because the Arms Trade is out of control. For the past five years, Oxfam, Amnesty International and the International Action Network on Small Arms have been campaigning for an International Arms Trade Treaty to bring the global trade in arms under control. Already more than one million people from 160 countries have backed the campaign through its Million Faces Petition.
The STUC Women’s Committee is aware that women have paid a heavy price for the uncontrolled arms trade with their bodies, their homes and their lives. Most people killed in the home are women, murdered by men they know. Research shows that a man’s access to firearms increases a woman’s risk of being killed. In the years following Canada’s tightening of its gun laws, the gun homicide rate for women dropped by 40%.
2.
The campaign for tougher international gun control is now reaching a crucial stage with the meeting of the UN General Assembly this October. A resolution will be put to the General Assembly, calling for negotiations to begin on a legally binding global Arms Trade Treaty. We need to build pressure on governments to support this resolution by increasing our level of public campaigning.
It is hoped that the Conference we are holding on the 9 October will help build this public pressure and to make more people aware of the campaign. Please note that the Conference is open to all trade union members, male and female. The support of the Scottish Women’s Convention along with Oxfam in Scotland, means that there is no cost to delegates wishing to attend this Conference, and I would like to encourage affiliates to nominate delegates to participate. A nomination form is enclosed, which should be completed and returned to the STUC by Thursday 21 September 2006.
The Conference will be addressed by the Judith Robertson, Head, Oxfam in Scotland; Amnesty International’s Scottish Director, Rosemary Burnett; and David Grimason, the Scot who’s young son Alistair was tragically killed by firearms in Turkey. Further speakers are to be announced in due course.
The STUC endeavours to make all its events as accessible and disabled friendly as possible, therefore, if you have any nominees who have a disability or special needs, please can you indicate these on the attached Facilitation Form, which should be returned to the STUC by Thursday 21 September 2006. If required, childcare arrangements will be available. An appropriate form can be obtained from the STUC offices. Please note that all childcare costs will be passed onto the applicant’s own organisation. Applications for childcare facilities should reach the STUC by Thursday 21September 2006.
Yours sincerely
