CCA MAJOR CONFERENCE ON 'CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR WORK-RELATED DEATHS'

This conference will discuss the decision by the UK government to apply its corporate manslaughter bill to Scotland - preventing the Scottish Executive from legislating on the issue itself. Is this the end of a separate law on corporate homicide for Scotland and what impact, if passed in its current form, will the Westminster bill have on Scotland? The conference will also look at the role and limitations of Fatal Accident Inquires and review claims that work-related deaths are being under-counted. More Details

Culpable Homicide Bill Lodged

The STUC and our affiliated organisations are continuing to support Karen Gillon MSP's Private Members Bill, lodged on 14th September, to amend the law of culpable homicide to ensure that it applies across all of our society. Within hours of lodging the Bill it is believed over 50 MSPs have already indicated their support. Currently not one organisation or responsible individual within an organisation has been convicted following the death of a Scottish worker or member of the public as a result of their organisations actions. The STUC share Karen Gillon's view that this is a great injustice and the hundreds of families who have been affected by the inconsistency of our current culpable homicide legislation deserve much matter. The consultation has now closed but we have attached a summary of the responses along with a letter that the STUC would ask everyone to take some time to send to your own MSPs seeking their support for Karen Gillon's Bill.
