STUC calls for urgent review of Fatal Accident Inquiries after North Sea tragedy findings

Following the publication of the findings from the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the deaths of 16 men in the Miller Helicopter tragedy in the North Sea on 1st April 2009 the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has again called on the Scottish Government to review the Fatal Accident Inquiry system.

Bob Crow

Reacting to the news of the death of Bob Crow, leader of the Rail Union, RMT, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “Everyone at STUC is deeply saddened by the passing of Bob Crow. Since 2002, Bob led his union with courage and distinction and will be greatly missed, not just by his own members but by trade unionists across Scotland and the whole of Britain.

STUC comment on the death of Professor Ailsa McKay

Speaking after the death of Professor Ailsa McKay had been announced by Glasgow Caledonian University where she worked, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said, “With the tragically early passing of Professor Ailsa McKay the STUC has lost a great friend, colleague and counsel. Ailsa always had time to help and support any project which sought to improve the lives of working people and she made a particularly special contribution to the work of our Women’s Committee and Close the Gap project.

STUC welcomes asylum initiative for Ugandans facing persecution

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has welcomed the initiative of the Scottish Government to offer asylum to any Ugandan persecuted by their Government’s new Anti-Homosexuality Act.
