Commenting on today’s ONS labour market statistics for Scotland which confirmed another significant rise in unemployment and even bigger fall in employment, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has challenged the latest attack by the United Kingdom Government on the employment rights as the Con-Lib Coalition Government seek to increase the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from twelve months to two years and abolish the participation of lay members on employment tribunals.

Commenting as the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) published its 2012 Budget Submission to the Chancellor, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “We are publishing this submission on the eve of release of new labour market statistics for Scotland. Whatever happens tomorrow, all credible forecasters believe unemployment will remain high and above pre-recession levels through the course of this UK Parliament.

The Scottish TradesUnion Congress (STUC) has today sent a message of solidarity to the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) supporting it in its fight to establish a new collective agreement with the Port of Auckland Limited (POAL). POAL has issued redundancy notices, hired non-unionised contracted workers and offered individual employment agreements in an apparent bid to divide the workforce. The First Minister Alex Salmond MSP will visit the workplaces of the recipients of the 2011 STUC Union Rep Awards on Friday, 9 March 2012. The workplace visits have come about after a meeting between the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and the First Minister in October 2011 at the Scottish Parliament.
